To Work or Not To Work…addendum

Standard

Do you know the tangle that my last post’s picture represents??  I’ll be editing this post as guesses come in.  There’s a green Lokta Zentangle envelope for the first person who gets it right.

Virginia said, “Web”.  That’s not it…keep trying everyone.

Here are some other guesses – hekzee, paradox, flutter pie, afterglow…no correct one yet

Bon 🙂

To Work or Not To Work…that is the question!

Standard

I learned Friday that my job position has been eliminated!  Interesting how things happen in your life.  I keep wishing I could retire.  But I didn’t plan on it happening like this.  So here I am trying to figure out how I can do what I love (teach and share) and stay afloat.   Others have done it, so why can’t I?

Unfortunately,  it always seems that obstacles are in the way.  You’ve heard them…Not quite old enough (but, really, how old is old?); not enough money in the bank (but, really, do we EVER have enough money in the bank?); what about health insurance (but, really, isn’t that what Aflac is for?); what would the neighbors say (but, REALLY, whose life is it anyway?).

My brain says I need to have a J.O.B., my heart tells me otherwise.  It kind of reminds me of a certain tangle I know and love…here’s a picture of it that I snapped recently while at my place (soon to be NOT) of employment.  The first person** who can tell me what tangle this picture looks like will receive a beautiful, green Lokta Zentangle envelope.  I’m down to 9 of these…they are quite rare you know 🙂

VC HallwayIt’s telling me that there is a light at the end of the tunnel and that I just need to follow the arrow path (kind of like the Yellow Brick Road).  Most likely I’ll end up with another job for the security of insurance and a constant paycheck.  However, you never know..I might be just enough of an adventurer to head towards the light.

…On the Journey to Happy Tangling!

(**There is a caveat – if you have won before, please give someone else a chance, thanks!)

Nerd I’m Not

Well, I just posted my last post and found out that the links don’t work as well as I’d like!  I need to take a WordPress class and make believe it’s an art class!!  Maybe I’d learn something then.  Hope you can find the info by googling, gang.  Sorry…I’m technically challenged…give the girl a chance, she’s still learning after all these years.  B 🙂

I recently had the fantastic (well, Zentabulous!) opportunity to spend some time on the East Coast.  My dad, who is a comic book artist, is headed towards his 89th birthday!  We’ll be having a family reunion/party for him when he hits 90, but this time was special for me to spend alone with him and his wife, Sue.  If you are interested in learning about his comic book career, you can visit him at Sam Glanzman.  He lives on 10 acres just outside Oneonta, NY (for you non-NY’ers, it’s 80 miles West of Albany).  Oneonta is a wonderful, vibrant, college town.  There’s lots to see and do (Cooperstown Baseball Hall of Fame is a great draw very near there).  It was a great visit and we had perfect weather!

While visiting, I decided to take advantage of being on the East Coast and also attended a week-long art camp.  I was in heaven!!  No phones to answer, no paperwork to push, no deadlines to meet (from the J.O.B.)  It was just full days of learning the art form of Katazome.  Katazome is the ancient art of a Japanese method of dyeing fabrics using a resist paste applied through a stencil.  We learned from a teacher who tutored under John Marshall, who is well know in the art here in the States.  It originated from Keisuke Serizawa, a Japanese textile artist.  In 1956 he was designated as a National Treasure by the Japanese Government.  Absolutely unbelievable work, so delicate, so innovative, so beautiful!!  Here’s a link to a video that you can watch…Keisuke Serizawa.

So, Serizawa tutored a woman (sorry, I don’t know her name), who tutored John Marshall, who tutored my teacher, Jenny Hermenze (of Vermont).  So we were very honored to learn under her.  We learned to design and cut our stencils out of this absolutely marvelous paper, which, by the way, they are apparently no longer producing (too bad because it was just incredible to work with – but apparently very expensive and painstaking to produce -sheet goes for about $50 each), screen the back of the stencil with silk netting, make/cook up the paste resist, apply the paste to the fabric with the stencil, dye the fabric, etc.

This all took place at Snow Farm in Williamsburg, MA.   A wonderful nonprofit organization that teaches any number of craft skills to those who are interested.  Their classes run about $800 for the week, but it includes the classes, mostly all of the supplies, accommodations, and food – yes, let’s talk about the food!  Wonderful meals 3 times a day…we certainly didn’t go hungry!  You can visit Snow Farm to view the campus and see what they offer.

Here’s a picture of one of my completed projects…and a contest!  The first one** who emails me at EmeraldCityTangles@yahoo.com and tells me what the tangle name is on the blue scarf located on the far right will receive a beautiful Zentangle envelope (5.5″ x 7″) made from the green Lokta paper from the original Zentangle kits.  These envelopes are no longer being produced so you can’t buy them.  I have 10 in stock that I will be using for future give-aways so keep your eyes open on future posts.

Happy Tangling!

Lions, and Tigers, and Bears, OH MY!

Standard

OH MY!  It’s been so very long since I’ve had a chance to post anything here.  Let me just say, I have been in the process of moving and if any of you are even thinking about it, you’d better start packing now!  During the past two months I found a new place to live, started packing, went through a closing, and finally, finally! the furniture and boxes are all moved in.  It’s quite an exciting time for me but has exhausted me in more ways than one.  The sheer energy that goes into preparing for everything is enough to drain you.  What an eye opener!  I don’t know about you, but as I started packing I realized how many things I have doubles and triples and quadruples of!  Especially in the art department.  Pens, paints, pencils, books, papers, canvas, glue, tape, brushes, embellishments.  I am a saver of knick-knacks, and paddy-whacks, and give a dog a bone!  Opps,  make that a cat.  Sweetheart (aka: PIA, pain in the ass) also has doubles of everything!  Scratching posts, fuzzy balls, crinkly balls, feather boas, water bowls, litter pans!  And what does she prefer??  My furniture for clawing.  So, the new furniture I now have is covered in plastic, like the old days!  But Wait…there’s more!  Now I have extra space to store all this stuff in.  I actually have a room where I can store all my supplies, set up my craft table and maybe get some work done.  In the apartment I used to have to work at my tiny kitchen table, set up, do what I could, and then put everything back so I could find a place to put my dinner plate down.  Now I can set up and walk away and come back at my leisure.  It is a good thing.

In the meantime, I’ve held several workshops in Newton, KS, at the Carriage Factory Gallery.  Cindy Snider, Director, has been so pleasant and helpful.  We had a beginner workshop in January with 18 students, and then another beginner workshop with 17 students.  After that we held an advanced workshop with about 10 students.  More workshops will be forthcoming once I straighten up here and get some of those art supplies unpacked.  Beginner workshops will still be offered at Andover on the last Saturday of the month, along with our Talk & Tangle sessions.  You can find out about them under the “Workshops/Demos” tab.

So, until then, here’s to all those lions, and tigers, and bears out there – Happy Tangling, Bonnie

Another Newton Workshop…

Standard

Newton is hopping!  Our Beginner Zentangle Workshop was packed again with 17 students in attendance!!  We had a great time and it was amazing to view all of the Zentangles…we placed them all on a board and each and every one was different, even though all used the same tangles and initial string.  Carriage Factory Gallery is a wonderful venue and if you haven’t had an opportunity to view the artwork on display there, you must take the time to visit.  Please introduce yourself to Cindy (Director) and let her know you are a Zentabulous Tangler!  I am excited to offer an advanced workshop in March 2013, so please visit the Workshops/Demos page here on my blog.  I’m a bit behind, so I’ll post pictures at a later date…

Until then…Happy Tangling!!
