Your Guess is as Good as Mine!

Standard

As of today, June 15, no one has been able to guess the tangle name from the photo I posted.  At least I haven’t seen the answer from anyone up until this point.  If you know the answer, please post it on my Facebook page, EmeraldCityTangles, or email me directly at EmeraldCityTangles@yahoo.com.

Here it is again, just in case you missed it…

I’m not sure if no has guessed it because it’s an official Zentangle tangle (so it’s not listed on Linda’s site, TanglePatterns) or if it’s because not enough people have seen the post.  Either way, I’m brazen enough to give you a hint or two…(psst…one has already been given).  Sue Clark, CZT, from Loveland, CO, used this tangle back in 2011 when Laura Harms, Diva Weekly Challenge, gave the challenge to use a monotangle.

I’m closing this contest out as of next Saturday, June 22.  If no one guesses by then, the Lokta envelope will be used in another contest.

Don’t forget, if you haven’t signed up yet for the Zentangle a la Carte being held at the Carriage Factory Art Gallery in Newton, KS, on June 22 and July 6, click the link and register.  Spaces are still available.

Happy Tangling from the Land of OZ!

To Work or Not To Work…that is the question!

Standard

I learned Friday that my job position has been eliminated!  Interesting how things happen in your life.  I keep wishing I could retire.  But I didn’t plan on it happening like this.  So here I am trying to figure out how I can do what I love (teach and share) and stay afloat.   Others have done it, so why can’t I?

Unfortunately,  it always seems that obstacles are in the way.  You’ve heard them…Not quite old enough (but, really, how old is old?); not enough money in the bank (but, really, do we EVER have enough money in the bank?); what about health insurance (but, really, isn’t that what Aflac is for?); what would the neighbors say (but, REALLY, whose life is it anyway?).

My brain says I need to have a J.O.B., my heart tells me otherwise.  It kind of reminds me of a certain tangle I know and love…here’s a picture of it that I snapped recently while at my place (soon to be NOT) of employment.  The first person** who can tell me what tangle this picture looks like will receive a beautiful, green Lokta Zentangle envelope.  I’m down to 9 of these…they are quite rare you know 🙂

VC HallwayIt’s telling me that there is a light at the end of the tunnel and that I just need to follow the arrow path (kind of like the Yellow Brick Road).  Most likely I’ll end up with another job for the security of insurance and a constant paycheck.  However, you never know..I might be just enough of an adventurer to head towards the light.

…On the Journey to Happy Tangling!

(**There is a caveat – if you have won before, please give someone else a chance, thanks!)

Katazome scarves – silk

I recently had the fantastic (well, Zentabulous!) opportunity to spend some time on the East Coast.  My dad, who is a comic book artist, is headed towards his 89th birthday!  We’ll be having a family reunion/party for him when he hits 90, but this time was special for me to spend alone with him and his wife, Sue.  If you are interested in learning about his comic book career, you can visit him at Sam Glanzman.  He lives on 10 acres just outside Oneonta, NY (for you non-NY’ers, it’s 80 miles West of Albany).  Oneonta is a wonderful, vibrant, college town.  There’s lots to see and do (Cooperstown Baseball Hall of Fame is a great draw very near there).  It was a great visit and we had perfect weather!

While visiting, I decided to take advantage of being on the East Coast and also attended a week-long art camp.  I was in heaven!!  No phones to answer, no paperwork to push, no deadlines to meet (from the J.O.B.)  It was just full days of learning the art form of Katazome.  Katazome is the ancient art of a Japanese method of dyeing fabrics using a resist paste applied through a stencil.  We learned from a teacher who tutored under John Marshall, who is well know in the art here in the States.  It originated from Keisuke Serizawa, a Japanese textile artist.  In 1956 he was designated as a National Treasure by the Japanese Government.  Absolutely unbelievable work, so delicate, so innovative, so beautiful!!  Here’s a link to a video that you can watch…Keisuke Serizawa.

So, Serizawa tutored a woman (sorry, I don’t know her name), who tutored John Marshall, who tutored my teacher, Jenny Hermenze (of Vermont).  So we were very honored to learn under her.  We learned to design and cut our stencils out of this absolutely marvelous paper, which, by the way, they are apparently no longer producing (too bad because it was just incredible to work with – but apparently very expensive and painstaking to produce -sheet goes for about $50 each), screen the back of the stencil with silk netting, make/cook up the paste resist, apply the paste to the fabric with the stencil, dye the fabric, etc.

This all took place at Snow Farm in Williamsburg, MA.   A wonderful nonprofit organization that teaches any number of craft skills to those who are interested.  Their classes run about $800 for the week, but it includes the classes, mostly all of the supplies, accommodations, and food – yes, let’s talk about the food!  Wonderful meals 3 times a day…we certainly didn’t go hungry!  You can visit Snow Farm to view the campus and see what they offer.

Here’s a picture of one of my completed projects…and a contest!  The first one** who emails me at EmeraldCityTangles@yahoo.com and tells me what the tangle name is on the blue scarf located on the far right will receive a beautiful Zentangle envelope (5.5″ x 7″) made from the green Lokta paper from the original Zentangle kits.  These envelopes are no longer being produced so you can’t buy them.  I have 10 in stock that I will be using for future give-aways so keep your eyes open on future posts.

Happy Tangling!

Domino Effect…

Standard

Oh my…I’m in love with Dominoes!  So I just have to offer a workshop for tangling them and making necklaces out of them.  Just think…if we tangled all the dominoes we could find, we could put them in a row and hit one, and they’d all fall down.  Or we could build a Domino House, or brick a sidewalk with them…I’m thinking there are lots of possibilities with tangled dominoes!  Here’s a sample of what we’ll be taking away from the class.  Guess what everyone’s getting for Christmas!!

CZT Zentangle Retreat

Standard

What do you call a woman who is bleary-eyed, hyped, all tangled up and screaming “Zentangle is coming!   Zentangle is coming!”  You call her addicted!  You call her totally tied to tangling, you call her Bonnie, Tangling in the Land of Oz!!  Our CZT Zentangle Retreat has been going since Friday morning at 8:00 am, usually ending at about 11:00 pm each evening.  At this point most of us are bleary-eyed and hyped!  Angie Vangalis (CZT #3) has been our training mentor and the entire program she set up for us has been absolutely marvelous.  She is an energetic, fun, informative lady who was certified as a CZT in the 3rd Certification class, and who has been involved in graphics and marketing for many, many years.  During our time here we’ve learned a ton about marketing, and have done a whole bunch of different projects to share with Zentangle enthusiasts in our areas.

We have a great group in attendance (about 20) which allows us to really get to know each other!  It’s been such a Zentabulous experience to get to share with these ladies, hear about what they are doing with Zentangle in their areas (Texas, New York, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Florida, New Mexico, Illinois, and KANSAS – THAT’S ME), and see what kinds of projects and work they are doing and teaching.

Tomorrow, our last day, we get to spend with Suzanne McNeil, one of the Zengtangle Divas!  You can learn all about Suzanne and her wonderful books and knowledge at http://blog.suzannemcneill.com.

For now, here’s a picture of the Zendala I made last evening.  Suzanne taught us this and it was really lots of fun!  I had to laugh because mine ended up looking like a marijuana leave (but with 6 leaves), so I called it Lucky Marijuana (Lucky Mary) for short – LOL!!!

Tangling in the Land of Oz…Happy Tangling!

Bonnie 🙂
